New Avengers Omnibus Vol 1 Brian Michael Bendis David Finch Frank Cho Rick Mays Books Reviews
- I had the 7 hardcovers. I sold them as soon as I heard about the Omnibus. Did it worth it?
HELL YEAH!!!
First of all, I must say that I really enjoy The New Avengers run. Is fun, full of action, character development, great art. You name it!
My reasons for giving it 5 stars come as follow
* Content Even when the book is New Avengers, Marvel decided to include also the Avengers Disassemble trade in here. Short story, not particularly out of the charts, but it is a great start for this series. Plus, the art by Finch is just great!
* Quality If you've seen a Marvel Omnibus before, you don't need to keep reading. I love how this book looks, the binding, paper quality. Perfect craft!
* Price Over 1200 pages for $70 (plus the quality and beautiful design this book have), is just a great price to pay. I must say that I paid a little less because the discount was bigger when I per-ordered, so maybe I'm not been partial on that one.
These were MY reasons for why the book rocks. I can't expect someone feels the same though.
Regarding the content, this Omnibus collects the equivalent of Avengers Disassemble, New Avengers Vol. 1, New Avengers Vol. 2 and New Avengers Vol. 3. I believe the hardcovers for those books are no longer in production, and if you find them, most likely they'll be super priced.
Also, all the extra material on the hardcovers were ported here. Is great, but I guess I would have liked something new. That's just a minor complaint though.
I give the book a very enthusiastic 4.5 stars! - This version of the avengers comes together (almost by fate) in the wake of a tragedy that breaks up the traditional team as we know them. This team includes fan favorites like Wolverine and Spider-Man, and they are exactly as you'd expect them to be; perhaps what Bendis does best here, however, is making the lesser known characters shine. Luke Cage and Spider-Woman are as interesting and human as ever, and through their own trials become the focus of large chunks of the nearly 1200 page story. A story of this size is going to have its faults and shortcomings, but it remains largely consistent throughout. The largest story complaint is that this had to be so largely affected by the many events surrounding it (House of M and Civil War), that is can, at some times, feel like a giant supplemental story rather than its own. Such is the nature of comic events, though.
Artists like David Finch broke out here, and although his art is okay, it is not my typical cup of tea; however, there are so many artists on this book, there is bound to be some you love while some you won't. None of it is bad, but I would've preferred more by the amazing Alex Maleev; his issues in this book art fantastic, and it is great to see him working with Bendis again. The number of artists and styles doesn't cause the book to suffer quite like so many other omnibus collections out there, as there are some similar artistic threads throughout all the issues some are just going to be preferred over others.
As far as quality of the omnibus itself, this is as good as ever, and uses the thicker, heavier paper before Marvel switched. I don't like it quite as much because this is already so large and unwieldy, but this book will surely hold up over the years because of it. The reproduction of inks is spot on, and the large extras gallery is great (if not necessary). There is a whole section detailing the villains within the book, and that is appreciated as so many of them are not your typical Marvel villains. The book is a good value at its cover price, but the deep discounts offered by some of the marketplace sellers on here makes it a no-brainer (~$35 at the time of this writing). - Excellent art and story that ends the classic Avengers team, and forms the New Avengers. The book itself features a sewn binding and high quality paper with over 1200 pages. Best of all, the omnibus will remain flat while you read it.
- You buy this book for the art? Finch,Cho are at top their game. The prison break out is a fan boy dream. The splash page has so many villain, I dare you to name them all.
- This is my favorite collection thus far. The art and story/writing are excellent.
- I'd stopped reading comics for a while and this book is renewing my interest. Enjoyable read.
- OK - Great writing, very fast read. Great artwork! My only complaint is that about 1/2 way through the book there are large sections of the story missing. Instead of including material with gaps, why not fill in the gaps? For example, constant references to "The House of M", Without knowing any details of the house of M, the story becomes muddled and confused. Same thing during Civil War. Far too many references referring to the Civil War that interrupt the story line and confuse the whole project. Why didn't Marvel just include "The House of M" and leave the Civil War out. Then there would have been continuity, and the story would have made sense. Then make a 2nd Omnibus with Civil War, and make it complete, even if there are several Authors involved. Still, it was a fun book and worth the read!
- I am a huge avengers fan so I love the story! Shipping was fast! It is something to cherish for a while.
